Centre of Excellence for Feedstock and Biorenewable Energy Source
The Department of Green Chemistry based in University of York are at the forefront of innovation in the Biorenewable sector and appointed Bouygues Energies & Services as the EPC Contractor responsible for turnkey design and delivery of an open access scale-up biorefinery facility utilising plant derived materials as sustainable feedstocks for high value chemicals.
Bouygues Energies & Services’s initial involvement was to develop a strategic masterplan with the University of York to provide a highly flexible, world class centre of excellence for biorefining technologies.
Within an existing live operational facility we have integrated and commissioned world leading novel equipment technologies for biorenewables in terms of efficiency/energy consumption and production such as: Microwave Technologies, Spinning Cone Separation, Supercritical C02 extraction and Ammonia Fibre Expansion based systems supported with upstream biomass feedstock crop/grain/ pellet handling systems and a biofermentation train reducing processing times from weeks to hours.

The processes, which have been developed in the laboratory, are being scaled up in the modular processign facility. The centre will allow users to perform novel extraction and purification of biorenewable chemicals from a range of feedstocks.
