Engineering to protect our healthcare professionals

Bouygues Energies & Services are pleased to have our team volunteering as part of a cross industry group of engineers supporting the Institute of Chemical Engineers’ (IChemE) and ISPE United Kingdom Affiliates LTDs COVID-19 Response Team. The aim is to provide a safe long term solution to protect our healthcare workers at testing and treatment stations using a low cost flexible film barrier technology.

The two routes of transmission for COVID-19 are mucus membranes contact/transfer and aerosol inhalation and the designed Flex Barrier prevents both by having the patient and the healthcare worker in separate zones.

The Flex Barrier utilises COSSH regulation 7 and the hierarchy of controls to ensure the safety of both patient and healthcare worker, whilst allowing the healthcare worker to carry out their checks. The concept addresses and gives at risk workers protection, by providing barrier containment control measures and maintaining continuity of service and testing in general healthcare.

The Flex Barrier is the first line of defence to prevent transmission, and this can be used on its own or in conjunction with PPE, allowing the PPE to be prioritised and utilised for critical use. This will in turn facilitate and reduce the demand for PPE.

The Flex Barrier devices can be used in a number of different healthcare environments:

GP Surgery Fixed Testing Station – Flex Barrier on various doors and in corridor location to perform various medical procedures such as throat swabs, sat oxygen levels, laser temperature, blood tests

NHS Mobile Testing/Treatment Station – Within hospitals transporting the device to the patients

Care Home Mobile But Fixed Testing Station – Within care home setting patients bought to station

Dental Chair Fixed Treatment Station – Within dental care settings, this is a long term sustainable solution that would allow the safety of all our healthcare professionals and allow dentist to start treating patients again.

Drive through testing stations – to fully isolate healthcare workers from patients

“Collaboration and sharing of skills are key during these challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. We were contacted by IChemE and ISPE members to assist in developing an idea as part of their COVID-19 Response Team; it is our pleasure at Bouygues Energies and Services to support great initiatives like this where we can” said Adeel Aslam, Technical Director at Bouygues Energies & Services.
