This month, we spoke to Steve Sydenham, an Installation Operative and former Level 2 Electrical Installation Apprentice. We discuss his time on the Bouygues Apprenticeship Scheme, his recent win at the Highway Electrical Association (HEA) Apprentice of the Year awards, and his next steps as a Level 3 Apprentice. Can you tell us a bit about who are you and what do you do?

My name is Steve Sydenham and I joined Bouygues E&S in April 2019, starting on the 2-year 'Highways Electrical Maintenance & Installation Operative' Apprenticeship. I am now an Installation Operative, working on Barnet and Enfield Street Lighting.

What does your day-to-day look like being on the apprenticeship scheme?

The role is quite varied and involves both practical work and studying. Whilst being an apprentice, I have been paired with different people to shadow them and learn on the job. This has given me the opportunity to get involved with a bit of everything relating to street lighting; from the installation of street columns, to the reactive maintenance of street lighting.

How do you effectively balance your work and study time?

I have been very supported by Bouygues E&S when it comes to balancing studying and working. As an apprentice, one week every three months, I would visit Electrical Testing Ltd in Acle. This gave me the chance to take away the theory and implement it hands-on back on site.

Congratulations on winning HEA Apprentice of the Year. What has been a highlight of the apprenticeship scheme so far?

The biggest highlight has to be winning the HEA Apprentice of the Year but other than that, I have been able to meet some really great people and the support has been amazing.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

Make sure it is right for you. Apprenticeships are not for everyone, but it is a brilliant way to learn new skills, learn from other people’s experiences, and get on-the-job training, as well as obtaining technical knowledge from the classroom. So, if you enjoy a more hands-on approach to learning, an apprenticeship is definitely an option you could consider.

What are you looking forward to in the future for your career?

I'm really looking forward to starting my Level 3 Electrical Apprenticeship next year.
