We are delighted to have donated 30 mattresses to St Mungo’s Homeless Assessment Centre in Westminster.

These mattresses were left surplus from a client contract at the end of last year. On hearing they were going to be otherwise disposed of, Mark Farrington, one of our Contract Directors reached out to see if the mattresses could be rehomed.

St Mungo’s seemed like the perfect option. Founded over 50 years ago, the charity works to end homelessness and rebuild lives. The success they have in helping the homeless across London is down to their recovery-based approach. At the heart of all their services is a commitment to empowering individuals, to support people in their recovery journey and to prevent homelessness in the future. The charity recognises that each client has a unique set of skills and strengths that St Mungo’s uses as the starting point for moving towards a healthier, happier and more stable life.

It has been amazing to learn the impact these donated mattresses have had on the centre over the last few months.

Having 30 CRIB 5 compliant mattresses on site has allowed them to further improve the living standard at the centre. Mattresses are expensive to buy and not having to do so has meant St Mungo’s can spend that more on brightening up their existing facilities, like the reception area. They have purchased bookcases along with other furniture and plants, to give the place a more homely feel. 

Justin Newman, Service Manager at St Mungo’s said,

“We are so grateful for Bouygues Energies & Services’ donation to St Mungo’s Homeless Assessment Centre. Having such a large supply of mattresses readily available has meant that staff are able just say ‘yes, we can do that’ when clients make requests of us. The upgrades we have also been able to make to the building as a result has had a very positive affect on those spending a lot of time at our centre.”

“It is hugely satisfying to see the tangible impact of social and commercial value that simply re-using these mattresses can bring to a charitable homeless centre such as St Mungo’s.  It is very pleasing to see the thought, collaboration and physical effort across our UK contracts to deliver this truly positive result.  We will continue to look at and encourage maximising all the material we can to the benefit of organisations that need that extra support. This is a great example of Bouygues E&S’s social and ecological engagement who have already previously donated surplus furniture to schools and other institutions.”
