European Mobility Week – Bouygues E&S Shines a Light on Deploying and Facilitating Sustainable Mobility

Transport is the largest contributor of carbon emissions in the UK, with road and aviation being the biggest emitters. These modes of transport continue to have a significant impact on air quality, the environment, and in turn, climate change.

As the principal contributor to Bouygues Energies & Services’ scope 1 business emissions and scope 3 for our clients, we have been taking action to eventually eliminate the use of petrol/diesel fuelled vehicles across our fleet and contracts.

With the deployment and facilitation of sustainable mobility being high on Bouygues Energies and Services’ green agenda, this European Mobility Week, we are shining the light on key business initiatives and client solutions that will assist in reducing our carbon footprint, our clients’ and the transport sector’s.

While limited EV infrastructure remains a challenge in the UK, we are helping drive change through the installation of EV charging points across over half of our sites and at our own premises. This benefits our operational teams, office workers, mobile operatives and clients, as well as incentivising our people and end-users to make the switch to alternative fuel vehicles.

As clients increasingly prioritise sustainability, we can help them meet their objectives through the delivery of innovative EV charging solutions. From simple to more complex installations, we can offer scalable solutions that meet client’s existing and future needs.

We also recognise the key role we play in reducing carbon emissions in the built environment, another major emitter in the UK; this requires a proactive approach through our own business operations. Testament to the progress we are making, is the transitioning of our fleet and company cars to EVs and lower carbon emission vehicles. With a series of rollouts having already taken place over the last few years and being planned, we are picking up the pace in line with our ‘Together Further for Climate’ key strategic pillar and commitment to meeting our ambitious target of becoming net zero for scopes 1 and 2 by 2025 and for scope 3 by 2030.

However, EVs are not always suitable for all modes of transport, particularly for low mileage use. By thinking outside of the box and leveraging innovation, we are deploying alternative transport across a variety of our sites from healthcare to local authority contracts in the form of E-cargo bikes.

Simon Hayman, Regional Director for Bouygues E&S, enthused:

“Our site teams are already realising the benefits of using E-cargo bikes, making ground maintenance work easier and more efficient. Not only does this green initiative lessen our impact on the environment, but also improves air quality in highly polluted urban areas by taking diesel vans off the road.”

There is no doubt that we must all face the climate emergency together and Bouygues E&S remains steadfast in placing sustainability at the fore of everything we do, as Amelle Mestari, Director of Procurement and Sustainable Development, concludes:

“There is no time to wait, we must act now and fast in the midst of climate change. As a business that operates in an industry that is one of the largest emitters of CO2 and a contributor to the transportation sector’s emissions, we are committed to being a part of the solution and making a significant difference now and in the future.”
