We are thrilled that one of our apprentices, Steve Sydenham has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Highways Awards 2020 for Apprentice of the Year. The winner will be announced at the virtual awards ceremony on 28th January 2021.
Steve joined Bouygues Energies & Services in March 2019 and started on the two year ‘Highways Electrical Maintenance & Installation Operative Level 2’ apprenticeship. He is one of the 78 apprentices currently working for Bouygues E&S.
We asked Steve to tell us a bit about his apprenticeship, what he would tell someone about to embark on an apprenticeship scheme and what the future holds for him.
"The highlights for me so far during my apprenticeship have been meeting so many different people who are willing to help and advise, and obviously, this nomination, which wasn’t expected.
My role changes from day to day, with the bulk of the work being the removal or replacement of street furniture, identification and rectification of cable faults, and the general maintenance of equipment such as cleaning and gear changes to fix lanterns.
If I were to advise someone starting an apprenticeship, I would say that it is a great way to learn new skills, learning from other people’s experience and getting on the job training as well as technical knowledge from the classroom.
In terms of what the future holds, during the current pandemic, it’s hard to see where we will be going, but ideally, I would like to complete my NVQ level 2 and move on to a level 3, enabling me to further my knowledge and progress my career within Bouygues E&S."
His manager Patricia Kay, Contract Manager for Enfield Street Lighting PFI, said:
"It has been a pleasure for me to impart my knowledge and experience to Steve and to see him grow in confidence, successfully completing tasks and taking on a leadership role among his peers. He has used every challenge as a learning curve. He is a credit to our team and the company as a whole."
